Mattresses Buying Guide
We know how important a good night’s sleep is and selecting
the right mattress is the key to achieving this. A good mattress
can last for up to 10 years so investing in a good quality
mattress now will save you having to replace a poor one in a few
years. Our ranges include Single (3ft), Double (4ft 6”) and King
Size (5ft) mattresses in a variety of styles offering different
levels of firmness and designs. Read on for the full guide on
our mattresses.
Firmness Rating
Our
rating system allows you to see exactly how firm or soft the
mattress is with a simple 1-5 rating system, with 1 being soft
and 5 being very firm.
Spring Gauge
The gauge of the coils determines the
firmness and support of the mattress. The spring gauge rating
refers to how thick the spring is – the lower the number, the
thicker the spring and the thicker the spring, the firmer the
mattress. Technically referred to as 13.5 Gauge – Soft, 13.0
Gauge - Medium and 12.5 Gauge - Firm.
Pocket Springs
The
springs are individually nested and sewn either side with calico
whilst a flat steel isolating bar around the perimeter at the
first spring keeps all the springs together. Fillings are placed
on top and are tufted with several laces which is the most
efficient and traditional way of keeping all the fillings
together, which extends the lifespan of the product.
Gauge Rod
The gauge
rod is around the perimeter of the mattress and provides extra
strength and support.
Orthopaedic Mattress
Orthopaedic mattresses are
designed to support the spine and back by holding your spine the
correct alignment which helps to prevent the build-up of tension
and pressure. These tend to be firmer than normal mattresses.
Memory Foam
This high density foam has been developed by NASA and reacts to
temperature and your body. The foam has the ability to soften as
it warms allowing your body to mould the perfect shape into the
mattress. Pressure points are minimised and the spine is held in
perfect alignment. Coolmax technology also allows you to stay
cool in the hot summer months and remain warm on chilly winter
nights. Memory foam also makes it impossible for dust mites to
penetrate the mattress creating a cleaner and more hygienic
mattress.
Latex
A natural product that is harvested from rubber trees, Latex
distributes weight evenly and eliminates pressure points. It is hypoallergenic,
anti-microbial and virtually dust might resistant, so is ideal for allergy
sufferers.
Depth
This refers to how deep the mattress is from the top side to the
bottom side.
Rose & Norton Mattress
These
mattresses offer quality comfort at an extremely
affordable price. Perfectly suited for occasional or children’s
beds, they have a 13.5 Gauge spring unit which means
the thickness of the springs ensures the mattress isn’t too
firm. The 6 gauge rod edge helps the mattress retain its shape.
The deep quilt and layers of padding adds comfort and ensures
this mattress will last.
Chatham & Broadway Mattress
These
mattresses are perfect for people who
suffer from back problems. Constructed with high tensile springs
to hold your spine in correct alignment, these orthopaedic
mattresses helps prevent the build-up of tension and pressure in
your back. The orthopaedic filling encases a 12.5 gauge spring
system, which has a 6 gauge rod edge wire frame to provide extra
strength and durability. Covered with damask fabric with
macromatic quilted panelling.
Balmoral & Woodstock Mattress
These
mattresses are as close to a traditional handmade
mattress as you can get. The 1000 springs are encased in their
own individual pockets, so that they move independently without
catching on their neighbours. This means the springs only
respond to your body, which makes for a more comfortable nights
sleep. The generous layers of filling surrounding the springs,
combined with a smooth damask covering make this mattress a
great option for peaceful slumber.
Viscount & Marston Mattress
These
mattresses are the most high tech items on offer. A
1000 count pocket sprung base is topped with 70mm of V60 memory
foam, as developed by NASA. Memory foam reacts to temperature,
softening as it warms, so it responds to your body heat and
moulds to your curves. Pressure points such as shoulders and
hips are minimised, and your spine is held in perfect alignment,
whatever position you sleep in.
Barrington Mattress
The
Barrington mattress has the same traditional construction as the
Woodstock mattress. The 3000 springs are encased in their own individual
pockets, allowing them to react independently and in response to your body’s
movements. Deep fillings of cashmere, silk, lamb’s wool and cotton give a
luxurious feel that will aid a good night’s sleep. Double wool tufts holds
everything in place, and air vents assist air circulation.
Stratford Mattress
The
Stratford mattress combines a 2000 pocket sprung base with a layer of latex –
a natural product harvested from rubber trees. Latex provides similar support
to memory foam as it relieves pressure points and distributes weight evenly,
but it is also naturally hypoallergenic and virtually dust mite resistant. Many
also find latex cooler to sleep on than memory foam.
